General Description

Brassica Nigra or black Mustard is an annual plant that is cultivated for its black or dark brown seeds, which are the subjects in question. The flavour of Black mustard seed can be described as bitter, astringent and pungent.

Use Cases

Though rare, mustard seeds can be used to flavour some very exotic or experimental liqueurs.

Black Mustard seed is commonly used in cooking. In ancient times the plants were used by Romans. Later in the 13th Century in France the seeds were ground and used as a condiment, much like they are used today.

The seeds are commonly used in Indian quisine to flavour curry but are also used around the world to similarly flavour a variety of dishes.

As with many consumable herbs and spices, Mustard seeds were used as a folk medicine by some cultures, where it was common place to mix them ground seeds with honey and consume this mixture as a cough suppressant.
