General Description
Sambucus is a species of flowering plant that is better known as – and commonly called Elderberry or just Elderflower. The flowers themselves are small, white or yellow flowers that have a flavour consisting of a blend of a unique freshness along with some fruity, green and subltle floral characters with slight lychee, pear and tropical nuances. - Please note the additional information section for consumption guidelines.
Use Cases
Elderflower is commonly used to flavour different liqueurs due to its pleasant flavour profile and is especially used to flavour the popular Sambuca liqueur that of course lends its name from the Sambucus plant.
Elderflower can also be used to flavour floral ales along with wines and meads after being cooked to introduce it’s distinctive though subtle characters.
Additional information (If applicable)
Although the Flowers are edible when cooked, this is not the case with uncooked Flowers and are considered mildly toxic when consumed and may induce various gastro-intestinal symptoms when consumed that will vary in severity depending on how much is consumed. Thus it is highly recommended to cook the flowers before any intended consumption.
§ Storage
Keep packet sealed/closed tightly after opening, keep in a cool, dry place and away from pests.
§ Shelf life
These are dried ingredients and should not spoil in any reasonable time frame provided storage conditions are met, however some flavour and viability may be lost over long periods (Several months) of storage.
