General Description

 

Also known as Meridian Fennel and Persian Cumin, Caraway seed is Native to Western Asia, Europe and Northern Africa. The seeds themselves are small and commonly crescent shaped. Despite being called cumin in Switzerland, the taste of Caraway seed is quite different consisting of a nutty, bitter-sweet sharpness with a hint of citrus, pepper and mild liquorice.

 

Use Cases

 

Commercially Caraway seed is used in the production of kummel, which is a sweet, colourless liqueur that is commonly produced in Germany. Caraway seed can also be used in the production of other sweet liqueurs due to its lovely flavour composition.

 

Caraway seed is most commonly used as a spice in Switzerland but is also used in Central and Eastern Europe to flavour Rye bread, biscuits, caked and stews. It can also be used to flavour meat dishes, cheese, sauerkraut and pickles. Often this spice is combined with apples and potatoes.

Keep packet sealed/closed tightly after opening, keep in a cool, dry place and away from pests.

§                     Shelf life

These are dried ingredients and should not spoil in any reasonable time frame provided storage conditions are met, however some flavour and viability may be lost over long periods (Several months) of storage.
