More info:

Activated carbon, also called activated charcoal, is a form of carbon commonly used to filter contaminants from water and air, among many other uses. It is processed to have small, low-volume pores that increase the surface area available for adsorption or chemical reactions.

Activated carbon is used in a massive range of applications including storage, industry, remediation, medical use and agricultural use and filtration.

Use/Directions:

Though Activated carbon has many uses, the main use for our average home brewer will be for filtration, this will include filtering out impurities, off flavours and colour from spirits.

Activated carbon in powder form is often consumed in small quantities in water due to its supposed health benefits, including its absorption of impurities.

To filter using activated carbon powder it is recommended to add it to the liquid you wish to filter and then strain or filter the liquid through a different, plain filter in order to catch some or most of the carbon residue. A different but equally effective way of doing this would be to add the carbon powder in a filter first and then running your liquid through it to “purify” it.

Storage:

Keep in a cool, dry place.
